IS THE MARKET FOR CHINESE ART OUT OF BALANCE?

Sotheby’s New York sold at their March 22nd 2011 auction (Informing the Eye of the Collection: Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art from J. R. Tai & Co.) as lot number 120 a famille rose vase, described as “unusual famille rose and gold decorated vase with moulded design, probably Republic Period, with six character iron-red seal mark of Qianlong”, for $ 18,002,500.  Obviously some bidders thought this vase merited more than the estimate of $ 800 – $ 1,200.
