THE REBIRTH OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY

Many of us  who  became interested in Asian art  long time ago were inspired by the wild trading and dealing with the Orient  of centuries past,   life in the 19th century Chinese  treaty ports and  the East India Company.

My son recently came across an article about the 21st century version of the East India Company  –  a company that legally acquired the name and seal of the  first  East India Company, founded by Royal Charter in 1600 by Queen Elizabeth I. There was controversy in the past and there is controversy now – read this fascinating story. And after reading this, check out a book by  Amitan Ghosh, Sea of Poppies – that I am still reading  – dealing appropriately with the upheavals and wild trading of 19th century  India, with the East India Company, the  tea or opium wars and colonial upheavals.
