TRADITIONAL CHINESE TOGGLES:COUNTERWEIGHTS AND CHARMS

Duda, Margaret, Singapore 2011.

One of the few reference guides to Chinese toggles or zhuizi  – which are carved pieces of jade, bone, ivory, wood, shell, lacquer and more, used as counterweights to purses  slung over the belt to hold  tobacco, money and other objects.

I remember Layla Diba as the curator for Islamic Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Silver jewelry created by Turkmen tribal artists  and urban silversmiths  during the 19th and 20th century, presenting nearly two hundred  pieces.
