IS THIS EASTERN OR WESTERN ART?

IS THIS EASTERN OR WESTERN ART?

Although I always found this an intriguing question, it really is not an important one.

ART HK 2012 POST- COLONIAL CONTEMPORARY ART (May 17-May 20th)

recently taking place in Hong Kong, with 260 galleries from 38 countries transformed Hong Kong into a contemporary art capital. Art Basel has recently bought a controlling interest in Art HK but the director Magnus Renfrew who will remain in his position assured that the Fair will continue to be 50% Asian. Some people complained that the fair was not enough Asian …….

Think about — American and European galleries opening shop in HK and showing Chinese artists; a Korean dealer from Switzerland showing Korean artists in Hong Kong, an American artist ( Anselm Kiefer) inspired by his trip to China, an American – Chinese artist exhibiting in HK – the question that seems more important is the quality and accomplishments of an artist rather than where he was born and where he is working. Barbara Pollack, in an article about Art HK explores the question of is this more eastern or western, and doubts that it still makes sense to talk about an Eastern/Western divide. As an example she mentions Michael Joo, working on three continents, and Takashi Murakami, an international contemporary Japanese artist collaborating with Louis Vuitton.

What do you think?
