I have referred to this exhibit before and now had a chance to look at more images  of splendid objects from the grasslands and steppes of Kazakhstan! These pieces have never been seen in the United States and come from The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty

The  two plaques of double horned winged sphinxes date from the 5th/4th century BC. In the catalogue it says that these plaques of sphinxes with lion bodies, bearded male heads wearing horned caps, and curved wings were inspired by Achaemenid representations. It goes on to say that it is likely that these objects were imported directly from the Achaemenid world (think Cyrus the Great

What are we leaving being that can be admired in two thousand years?
