CYRUS THE GREAT OF PERSIA: TRAVELING EXHIBIT

CYRUS THE GREAT OF PERSIA

March 9 – April 28, 2013

THE SACKLER GALLERY/SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION CELEBRATES THE ARRIVAL OF THE CYRUS CYLINDER  FROM THE BRITISH MUSEUM WITH FESTIVITIES
In combination with the NOWRUZ FESTIVAL
 cyrus
Cyrus the Great, King of Persia and among other titles King of the Four Corners of the World, reigned 559 BC to 530 BC. He  is responsible for what historians consider the first historically important declaration of human rights as expressed on the CYRUS CYLINDER. He founded the Achaemenid Empire that he expanded from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indus River, respecting the laws and customs of the people he conquered!
Expanding on this “novel” idea, the Director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor  presents a lecture on Thursday March 7th at the Sackler on: THE MANY MEANINGS OF THE CYRUS CYLINDER, exploring the relevance of  Cyrus the Great and the significance the  Cyrus Cylinder might have today both for the Middle East and the world at large.
It is hoped that cultural and political leaders will attend.
Cheers
Elisabeth and Natasha
