MUSLIM PRESENCE IN KOREA?

July 6, 2013

3GORYEO  (918-1392) KINGS BECAME SONS-IN-LAW OF THE MONGOL YUAN  (1279-1368) ROYAL FAMILY (in China).

When Kublai Khan’s daughter  Khutugh beki (1259-97, reigned 1274-97) became queen of of Goryeo  (we have written about Goryeo celadons before….) she brought artists and architects from the Yuan court to the Goryeo court.

I have never thought about this before – even when I saw the obvious  similarities between  a celadon Goryeo flask and a Persian glass flask.

Korea was involved in international trade starting with the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE – 668 CE), and together with the Song dynasty (960-1279), Goryeo was in constant contact with the Islamic world.  A March 2013 article in the ORIENTATION MAGAZINE  explores this relationship; written by In-Sung Kim Han.

Let me know if you cannot find this article on the internet.

Photos best illustrate this relationship.
