33667-AA-l1Opening in  Ubud, Bali on October 7th

Natasha brought an interesting article to my attention about Ketut Madra, a master  artist of Balinese imagery – in painting and shadow puppetry. This fall Ubud the capital city of Bali, will feature the artist in the exhibit : Ketut Madra and 100 years of Balinese Wayang Painting at  the Museum Puri Lukisan.

Wayang painting is the painstakingly mastered and very detailed depiction of Indonesian myths often based on Hindu mythology. Madra starts out with an intricate pencil sketch before applying ink to the outlines with a pointed bamboo tool. Color comes last. The figures, their costumes, the iconography all convey the great stories of Bali. You would recognize some of the figures from shadow puppets used for the wayang kulit. Shadow puppet theatre  like the famous monkey god Hanuman.

I am reminded of one reverse glass painting from Bali  the China Coast happens to have found some years ago, showing similar subject. Or go and visit this exhibit!
