Kimono- A Modern History

A Modern History

September 27, 2014–January 4, 2015

This exhibit is based on the scholarship of textile historian Terry Satsuki Milhaupt who worked on a book about kimonos with the same title. Kimono: A Modern History, Reaktion Books, University of Chicago Press.

The exhibition and book cover kimonos during the last three centuries and show how with their kimonos the Japanese mirrored and responded and reacted to western influences, to modernization and the laws of their own country. The show has kimonos for children, for courtesans, for firefighters, for actors, with motifs of lobsters, clouds, warplanes, machine guns and tanks. You will see patterns on these kimonos you have probably never seen before.
